The New gTLD Program (Generic Top Level Domains) will be launched at the end of this year. This will allow trademark owners to register new domain names with extentions corresponding to their trademarks. The way to register these new domains is simple: trademarks holders must submit their marks to the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH), the centralized database that, after validating the submitted trademarks, will allow trademarks owners to register the domain names corresponding to their trademarks for 30 days ("Sunrise Period"). After such period, if third parties register a domain name similar to a trademark recorded in the Trademark Clearinghouse, the database will inform the corresponding trademark holder for a period of 90 days (plus possible extentions). This is a better way to control the registration of unauthorized domain names.
