Thailand joins the Patent Cooperation Treaty

After Chile and Peru, Thailand also became a contracting state of the Patent Cooperation Treaty, the 142nd. From 24 December 2009, date of entry into force of the Treaty in the country, it will be possible to designate Thailand for the filing of an international patent application. The PCT makes it possible to file with a single patent application, at the Patent and Trademark Office or at the WIPO, a multiplicity of patent applications in 142 states worldwide. The PCT procedure provides a very reliable international search, and if required, a preliminary examination conducted by the most authoritative Patent and Trademark Offices all over the world (EPO, USPTO, JPTO, ect.). The final granting is left to the decision of each single designated country’s Patent Office decision; however, a patent that passed the PCT filing and examination procedure provides an excellent chance of national success.
