New gTLDs for domain names from 2012

On 20 June 2011 ICANN approved the program for the registration of new generic top level domains, such as .sport, .hotel, .pharma, and new top level domains corresponding to trademarks, such as .ibm, .nokia, .canon. This decision puts an end to a long-lasting dispute between trademark owners and ICANN regarding the opening of the web to a huge number of generic top level domains. New gTLD registration applications can be filed by public or private organizations only if satisfying some strict requirements that will be later further defined by ICANN. New gTLDs can apply to industrial sectors/activities (ex.: .shop, .bank, .health.), brands (ex.: .canon, .hitachi), cities (ex.: .nyc, .paris, .milan), or linguistic/cultural communities (ex: .zulu, .kurd). A new gTLD can be formed by 3 or more letters, or, if the used alphabet is not the Latin one, 2 or more characters. Numbers and punctuation will not be allowed. Registration applications will be accepted by ICANN from 12 January 2012 to 12 April 2012. ICANN will then make them operating within the end of 2013. Registration costs of each domain will be very high, with the aim to avoid speculative rush to new gTLD grabbing. It has been estimated that the fee to be paid to ICANN will be 185.000 $, followed by other amounts yet to be finally defined. This project is the biggest change to the Internet domain naming system since the introduction of the .com, 26 years ago.
