Montepulciano d'Abruzzo turns 50 and becomes a registered trademark

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is the red wine of the Abruzzo region since 1968, the year of publication in the Official Gazette of the decree that recognizes the designation of origin (DOC) In 2012, a special Memorandum of Understanding between the Consortium for the Protection of Wines of Abruzzo and the Consortium for the Protection of Noble Wine at the Ministry of Agriculture, recognized both the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo (Abruzzo) and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (Tuscany) names, their coexistence and mutual respect. The problems arised when the Consortium for the Protection of Wines of Abruzzo decided to file the "Montepulciano d'Abruzzo" trademark on January 15, 2013. Despite the existence of the Memorandum of Understanding of 2012, it seems that the Consortium for the Protection of the Noble Wine of Montepulciano had not appreciated the registration of the Abruzzese trademark which claimed the products of class 33, and submitted therefore an opposition to the registration of the trademark. After five years of battles finally the Italian Patent and Trademark Office (UIBM) will be able to proceed in the next few days to finalize the decision of the Commission that definitively recognizes the territorial identity by registering the trademark Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
