How space agency NASA finances its programs: selling patents experimented in space for commercial application. GORETEX fiber, TEFLON pans and TEMPUR latex are just a few examples of how NASA supports its projects by selling to the consumer market materials that have been previously used in space. Recently NASA has partnered with automobile manufacturer Nissan in order to create a futuristic car that doesn’t require a human driver. The autopilot system of this electric car is the same used on Spirit, a station-controlled rover sent to Mars. NASA business strategy in the last years is based on partnerships with start-ups or market dominant companies such as Microsoft, Boeing and Omega. This results in economical benefits both for the consumers and for NASA itself that in the last years has suffered several cuts from the government.
