Brexit and the future of the .eu domain name extensions

As of March 30, 2019 UK is officially leaving European Union. Among others, Brexit is going to affect the field of domain names, in particular the ones with the .eu extension. Pursuant to Reg. (UE) 733/2002 currently in force, .eu domain names can be registered only in the name of: undertakings having their registered office within the EU, organizations established within the EU, natural persons resident within the EU. Such scenario will change with Brexit, since the subjects established or resident in the UK will no longer eligible to register .eu domain names. Moreover, according to a notice released by the EU Commission, the Registry for .eu will be entitled to revoke domain names in the name of UK-based subjects, even if registered prior to Brexit.
